Frequently asked questions

Nursing & midwifery schools, answered.

What types of nurse-training programmes are offered in Uganda?

Three principal routes: the Certificate in Nursing or Midwifery (2 years, leading to Enrolled Nurse / Midwife status), the Diploma in Nursing Sciences (3 years, leading to Registered Nurse / Midwife status), and the Bachelor of Nursing Sciences (4 years, run by universities). A small number of institutions also run advanced diplomas and specialist post-basic programmes (anaesthesia, critical care, palliative care).

What entry requirements apply to nursing school?

Certificate programmes typically require UCE with credits in English, Mathematics and the sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics). Diploma programmes require UACE principal passes including Biology, plus a credit in English at UCE. Bachelor programmes require UACE principal passes in Biology and Chemistry (or PCB), with course-specific cut-offs that shift year-on-year.

Are Ugandan nursing qualifications recognised internationally?

Yes, UNMC-accredited qualifications are recognised by most regulators in East Africa and across the Commonwealth, often with bridging requirements. UK, Ireland and Gulf-state regulators each have their own additional licensing exams; many Ugandan-trained nurses work successfully in those systems after meeting the local requirements.

How much does nurse training cost?

Government-aided certificate and diploma programmes charge subsidised fees (roughly UGX 400K–800K per term once boarding and other costs are added). Private nursing schools charge UGX 800K–2M per term. Bachelor programmes at private universities can reach UGX 2.5–4M per semester. Government-sponsored slots are competitive and cover most costs for successful applicants.
