Frequently asked questions

Universities, answered.

How many universities are there in Uganda?

Uganda has around 50 NCHE-accredited universities, split between public (e.g. Makerere, Kyambogo, Mbarara, Gulu, Busitema, Soroti, Lira, Kabale, Muni, Mountains of the Moon) and private (e.g. Uganda Christian University, Uganda Martyrs University, Kampala International University, Nkumba, Ndejje, Kyambogo, IUEA, Cavendish, Bishop Stuart, ISBAT). The list shifts as new institutions earn or lose accreditation.

What's the difference between government and privately-sponsored slots?

Public universities reserve a quota of places for government-sponsored students each year, funded centrally and allocated based on UACE results. Privately-sponsored students at the same universities pay full fees. Private universities operate entirely on fees, sometimes supplemented by partial-scholarship schemes.

What UACE points are needed for university entry?

Cut-offs vary widely by course. Highly-competitive Makerere courses (Medicine, Law, Engineering, Computer Science, Pharmacy) typically require 17–20 points for government sponsorship and 15+ for private sponsorship. Less-competitive courses at private universities can admit candidates with as little as two principal passes. Every university publishes annual cut-offs after each UACE release.

Are Ugandan degrees recognised abroad?

Yes, most are. Makerere, MUST, UCU, Uganda Martyrs and several others are well-recognised across East Africa, the Commonwealth, the US and Europe. For specific professional registration (medicine, law, engineering, accountancy) further local licensing exams are typically required in the destination country.
