Frequently asked questions

Assisted learning schools, answered.

What is assisted learning?

Structured extra support that lets a learner who finds part of the curriculum hard keep pace in a mainstream classroom, remedial lessons, a learning-support teacher, small-group help, or accommodations for a specific difficulty such as dyslexia, dyscalculia or ADHD. It sits between a fully mainstream school and a specialist special-needs school.

How is this different from a special-needs school?

A special-needs school serves learners with disabilities as its core mission. An assisted-learning or inclusive school is mainstream first, but runs a support unit and trained staff so children who need extra help learn alongside their peers rather than apart from them.

How do I know if a school really offers learning support?

Ask three questions: is there a named learning-support coordinator, what staff-to-pupil ratio does the support unit run, and what accommodations are offered in internal and UNEB exams. A school serious about assisted learning answers all three concretely.
