Frequently asked questions

Gifted & talented schools, answered.

What makes a school "gifted and talented"?

A school that deliberately identifies and stretches its most able learners, through accelerated streams, scholarship classes, enrichment beyond the syllabus, or intensive coaching for olympiads and competitions. In Uganda this often shows up as a school's top "A" stream, a sciences-talent programme, or a fully-funded scholarship intake for high PLE scorers.

How do schools select gifted learners?

Usually on entry-exam performance (PLE aggregate or a school-set assessment), sometimes combined with an interview or an aptitude test. A number of schools run merit scholarships that bring exceptional candidates in regardless of family income.

Is acceleration the same as a gifted programme?

Not quite. Acceleration moves a child through the syllabus faster; a true gifted programme also broadens, deeper projects, competitions, mentorship and independent research, so able learners are stretched sideways as well as forward.
