About

What this school is, in plain words

ISU is Uganda's flagship International Baccalaureate World School, accredited across PYP, MYP and DP, with a richly multinational student body drawn from more than 50 nationalities. Its 50+ acre Lubowa campus is the most architecturally generous in the country.

Founded in 1967 to serve Kampala's diplomatic and expatriate community, ISU has grown into a fully authorised continuum school where a child can progress from Early Years through to the Diploma Programme without ever changing institution or educational philosophy. That single, unbroken arc, rare anywhere in the region, is the school's defining promise to globally mobile families.

Teaching is delivered by a faculty recruited internationally and overwhelmingly trained in IB pedagogy, with class sizes held deliberately small so that inquiry-led learning, the heart of the IB approach, can actually happen rather than being aspired to. Specialist teachers in the sciences, languages, visual and performing arts, and physical education work alongside homeroom staff from the earliest grades.

To graduate compassionate, internationally-minded young people who can thrive in any university and any culture on earth.

ISU founding charter, 1967

Beyond the classroom, ISU runs one of the broadest co-curricular programmes in Uganda: competitive swimming and athletics on campus facilities, a 350-seat performing-arts theatre, Model United Nations, robotics and a service-learning agenda woven through the curriculum rather than bolted on. The school's house system and pastoral structure give every student a small community inside the larger one.

Graduates leave with a bilingual or trilingual profile and an IB Diploma that is read fluently by admissions offices on every continent, which is why ISU alumni are found at Ivy League and Russell Group universities, Canadian and continental-European institutions, and the leading universities of East and Southern Africa. The school frames its mission less as preparation for an exam than as preparation for a life lived across borders.

A message

From the director

Our mission is unchanged since 1967: to graduate compassionate, internationally-minded, intellectually curious young people who can thrive in any university and any culture on earth.

The Praecip verdict

Best-in-class IB programme; the priciest gate in Uganda

What stands out

ISU is the obvious answer for families committed to global mobility. The IB through-line is rigorous, the teaching staff genuinely international, and university outcomes consistently rival good US/UK private schools.

Where it falters

Cost is the obvious objection, annual fees rival Kenyan and South African peers and outpace local salaries. The aid programme is meaningful but oversubscribed. For families with the means, however, ISU is unrivalled in Uganda for international university admissions.
