Closes Fri, 21 August 2026

The Opportunity

  • The British Council is hiring an English & School Education Project Officer to support education programmes across Uganda. The role is based in Kampala and works on learning outcomes, teacher training and English language proficiency in schools.
  • Uganda's education sector still struggles with learning outcomes despite high enrolment. This position supports teacher professional development, addresses gaps in literacy and numeracy, and helps extend access for vulnerable children, including those in refugee-hosting districts.
  • You will help manage project timelines, monitor vendor performance and keep records accurate under British Council policy. It is a practical entry point into international development work.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Support planning and coordination of English and school education activities against project timelines and budgets.
  • Monitor vendor and supplier performance so training materials and services arrive on time and to standard.
  • Collect, verify and analyse programme data for reporting and evaluation.
  • Maintain accurate financial records and support budget tracking under British Council financial procedures.
  • Keep communication moving between the British Council, delivery partners and government education officials.
  • Help organise training workshops and events for teachers and education stakeholders across target districts.
  • Contribute to progress reports, case studies and learning documents for internal and external audiences.
  • Flag risks and delays to the project manager early, while there is still time to act.

Essential

  • Bachelor's degree in education, English, social sciences or a related field.
  • At least two years in project coordination, monitoring or administration within education or development programmes.
  • Proven ability to juggle multiple tasks, meet deadlines and work under pressure.
  • Strong written and verbal English, with experience preparing reports and presentations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel for data and Word for documentation.
  • Experience working with government partners, NGOs or private sector organisations in Uganda's education sector.

Desirable

  • Postgraduate qualification in education, project management or international development.
  • Previous work with the British Council or a similar international cultural relations organisation.
  • Knowledge of Uganda's national curriculum, teacher training frameworks or English language teaching methods.
  • Experience with monitoring and evaluation of education programmes using digital tools.
  • Familiarity with safeguarding principles and gender equality practice in education.
  • Willingness to travel within Uganda to support field activities in rural or remote areas.

What the Role Offers

  • Competitive monthly salary in line with British Council Uganda's pay scale for project officer roles.
  • Health insurance covering inpatient and outpatient medical benefits.
  • Annual leave, public holidays and sick leave under Ugandan labour law.
  • Access to online courses, workshops and British Council training programmes.
