A UNEB primary school is one that follows the Ugandan national primary curriculum and prepares pupils for the Primary Leaving Examination (PLE), set and marked by the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB). PLE is sat at the end of Senior 7 (P7) and is the gateway to UNEB secondary school (S1).

PLE candidates sit four papers, English, Mathematics, Integrated Science, and Social Studies (SST). Each paper is graded 1 (Distinction) to 9 (Fail). A pupil's aggregate is the sum of the four subject grades, so 4 is a perfect score and 36 the worst. Aggregate ranges map to four divisions: Division I (4–12), II (13–24), III (25–28), IV (29–32) and U (33–36).

Most schools open P1 applications in September of the preceding year, after the Term 3 holiday. Top-tier primaries often close their P1 lists by February. Mid-primary places (P2–P6) open on a rolling basis as families relocate. Praecip flags each school as Enrolment Open or Closed and shows the next intake window when known.

Government-aided UNEB primaries participate in Universal Primary Education (UPE), where core tuition is subsidised. In practice most government-aided schools still charge fees for lunch, development levies, exam coaching and uniforms. Private UNEB primaries charge full tuition, typically UGX 300K–2M per term depending on facilities and reputation.

The expected entry age for P1 is six years, with most schools accepting children up to age seven or, occasionally, eight. Children younger than six are usually placed in pre-primary (Top class) regardless of academic readiness. Schools that offer nursery (Baby class through Top class) start admissions from age three.

A school that consistently places pupils at Budo, Gayaza, Namilyango, Namagunga or SMACK is doing the academic and pastoral work that those senior schools select for.
